I finally got the courage to donate blood on Friday. A mobile unit was stationed at work and I went with a friend on my conference period. I kid you not, the day before, I spent half an hour debating whether or not to sign up for the drive in a campus e-mail. I didn't have the courage to commit to it until 'Manda asked me and said she'd go with me.

And it wasn't bad at all, which makes the fact that it took so long to donate all the more embarrassing. It didn't hurt, but the nurse did use a vein on my forearm just outside the crook of my elbow because the ones in the crook were tiny. And I saw all of the bags of blood and didn't get grossed out. Maybe it's age, maybe it's all of those damn tests from that issue last spring.

On Valentine's Day, Mom came down with the flu from hell. We took her to the ER it was so bad. I thought the trip was a little extreme, but Mom said she was in hell from aches and shivering. But she barely got better on Friday.

On Friday, Araina invited me over for a cookout with thick ribeyes on the menu. God, that was good meat. I had the munchies, maybe from being drained of a pint, so I bought turkey weenies and veggies for the meal. The coals took forever to warm up. So Araina stuffed the bottom with paper towels, I squirted lighter fluid for 30 seconds and threw in a lit match. I expected a mushroom cloud of fire like the one in Hiroshima on that August day, but it was more like the eternal flames on some Washington memorials. I o.d.'d on root beer. They had this sweet stuff in the fridge and I opened a bottle and Araina offered me another one while chowing on the steak. I could have very easily drained every bottle in the six pack.

Yesterday, I took the librarian out to play with my pistol collection. I almost had to cancel on her because of Mom's illness but we made it out since she was better. The librarian loved the outing, she told me ten times. And we went to Crave afterward. I'd never eaten there, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. I ate a lemon grass coconut soup and a burger with onion shoestrings, spicy raspberry chipotle sauce and cheddar. It was so good. I do get tired of going to restaurants with plastic seats, cheap sandwiches, and a drive-thru with an androgynous voice hissing from the speaker box in the clown's mouth. I enjoyed the dining experience even if the restaurant was crammed with trendy college kids and people coming out of the Cirque Du Soleil show. I gotta stop drinking chocolate stout. It never tastes like chocolate. I expect a beer that's more like YooHoo, but it's more like dark beer with a chip of cocoa in it.
