On Sunday, I did an overnighter at White Sands with Amanda. The heat was nasty, and the fact that the sun reflects on the gypsum dunes intensified it. I struggled lugging two heavy packs and the tent so we'd dump half our stuff near a dune marker and schlepp it little by little to the campsite. Once the tent was up, we crawled inside for shade, but it was warmer inside than out. We just semi-napped/meditated on our bed rolls till the sun went down. At night, we sat in the canvas chairs getting little light from the stars and crank lantern. I dug up a sand nest and sat in it since the sand was cool. I probably would have slept in that little hole if there weren't beetles and crickets crawling about.

The next morning we stopped at a Sonic in Alamogordo for breakfast-- sodas and hot dogs.

Kat texted me that she was going to study at Starbucks so after cleaning out all of the sand from my clothes and skin, I went over for an hour. Since I got there so late, I went back on Tuesday to spend more time with her. She had to write a paper for her criminology class, so I read one of her textbooks while she worked. When my gut was rumbling from hunger, and for meat and veggies instead of sweet coffee cakes, I took off and got a take-out tub of Chinese at a little greasy spoon buffet. Since it was after 9, they let me take an additional tub for free so I loaded up on the essentials-- General Tsao's, spicy chicken, coconut shrimp, beef tips, a few broccoli spears, and those skinny noodles.

It had rained while we were in the coffee shop and I did not feel like going home. A part of me really wanted to drive west to the Charcoaler's Drive-In and eat a burger with the windows and moon roof open. Instead, after picking up the Chinese, I drove to a school and parked the car and got out and walked around the outside. Several people had the same idea, so despite being a lone female wandering out at 10 p.m., I felt safe. I just did what the zombies do: go where you see people. A part of me was a little scared as it was dark, but it felt kinda good to just face that slight fear. Nothing happened at all, but once I lost sight of the other walkers, I headed back to my car which started to reek of all of the stuff packed in the Styrofoam tubs.
