Into the Wild: Dog Canyon
Jan. 23rd, 2012 10:58 pmThis past Saturday, Amanda & I drove out to Dog Canyon, Guadelupe Nat. Park to hike the Tejas Trail. The drive through winding roads and cow country made me welcome the 5+ mile hike up 1540 feet of elevation.
This has to be my second favorite hike next to Dripping Springs. DS had snow and ponds, but the fun factor this time around was the mess of bones Amanda found on the trail. Vertebrae, femurs, a pelvis, and some more were scattered in the dirt. I pieced the pelvis and legs best as I could and snapped a picture (see the cut). I'm trying to figure out what the animal was before it died. Web searches have led me to believe it may have been either a gray fox, a raccoon, or a small coyote.
After the hike, we drove into Carlsbad for gas since that was the closest station despite being 15 miles out of the way. We also stopped for milkshakes at a Sonic because oddly enough, hiking in swift winds and 50 degree temps gave me a craving for ice cream. We stopped several miles past the Border Patrol station to stargaze for 3 minutes. It was very windy and cold, but the sky looked like something from the movies. Tons of stars instead of the sporadic dots I see in my neighborhood. Amanda had a chicken soup stewing in a slow-cooker before we left and by the time we reached her house at 9-ish p.m., I was more than happy to chow on it. Her mom also made bread in the bread maker. I'm amazed that with the vanilla shake and cup of tea with cream, my lactose intolerance didn't kick in. Maybe physical activity helps build a tolerance for dairy.
On Sunday, somehow, I managed to make it to the gun show. I didn't win the Springfield XD they were raffling, but I did stock up on zombie attack targets. The hostage ones are fun to shoot. Guests also get a kick out of shooting at them. I could have easily dropped a lot of cash there, but after calculating my expenses, after the checks are cashed for my bills, I'm only left with $4.75 in checking. As much as I hated to, I transferred some funds from savings to cover myself. I'm only allowed to buy one more bag of dog chow and a box of feminine napkins before Jan 31.
